Beginning October 18th, the Dixon Gallery and Gardens in Memphis, Tenn., will
feature a unique collection of vintage Lucite acrylic handbags. The 150 handbags
are from the collection of Memphian Caryn Scheidt, who began collecting the bags
some 20 years ago because of their “artistic flavor.”
During the 1950s creative, fashion-forward American designers reinvented the
traditional handbag using Lucite acrylic, an exciting, new, decidedly modern
medium reflecting the futuristic trend of the times. Carrying a Lucite handbag
was considered the pinnacle of style in the fashion-conscious 1950s and
the bags could be found on the arms of starlets and fashion mavens alike. |

We’re very pleased and excited to be sponsoring this exhibit,” says Lucite’s
Business Director Simon Ellis. “Lucite has a great heritage and market
reputation for quality and fashion which we wanted to draw on as we bring the
brand into today’s consumer products. Sponsoring this exhibit allows us to build
on the beauty and design capability of Lucite from the past to get creative
juices going with the design community as we launch our new Perspex® from
Lucite® Frost and specialty lines.”
The exhibit runs through January 17, 2010 and is expected to travel to
additional U.S. cities. |
